Competency 3: Communicate Knowledge

Some would say that communicating is my forte.  Oh, who am I kidding?  My husband would just say that I don’t know how to stop talking.  Or emailing.  Or Facebooking.  Or texting.  What can I say?  I like to communicate in any form!  In my career, I spend a good deal of time in front of large crowds, presenting at conferences, implementing training sessions, and coaching.  Having the comfort level that I have with these type of situations allows me to explore new areas of education and instructional design, including working in distance situations with groups, creating video reflections, and conveying my thoughts and ideas via written reports.  The class that has allowed me to use the most forms of communication (verbal, written, and creative) was EDCI 672, so many of my artifacts below are from that course.

Communicates effectively in oral and written formats

Artifact- EDCI 672 VoiceThread Reflection http://voicethread.com/myvoice/#thread/5194442/26423335/34558054

Competency- This reflection allowed me to vocalize the thoughts I had about the EDCI 672 course, as well as allowing me to aid future students in their work related to identifying and applying key characteristics of problem solving for instructional design projects.

Artifact- EDCI 672 Case Study- Lynn Dixon Analysis

Competency- Oddly enough, my higher scores occurred on the earlier case studies in this course.  I believe as I progressed, I would over-think each situation and would try to over-analyze the complex situations.  This case study provided me with the chance to identify key components to an instructional design project, followed by the inclusion of problem-solving techniques using the contextual information, such as stakeholders, barriers and limitations to design, and consequences.  Writing all of this information into a formal case study mirrored creating a full proposal for future clients.

Effectively communicates content through the design/delivery of teaching/learning activities; integrate content and pedagogy

Artifacts- EDCI 672 Case Study Visual Reflections- Lynn Dixon Piktochart (available at https://magic.piktochart.com/output/3708995-a-wolfe-dixon-excr-edci-672-co) and Kiosk Design

Competency- Again from the Lynn Dixon case study, these two visual aids allowed me to identify the varied audiences and learning styles that needed to be addressed for the success of the project.  I was able to differentiate the user experience to address the needs of all types of learners (this also supports the next area of the competency related to adapting instruction).  An important skill for this competency includes the ability to develop relevant intervention strategies for the planned instruction.

Demonstrates the ability to adapt instruction and assessment techniques to the needs of diverse learners

Artifact- EDCI 577 Instructional Product Evaluation- Arthritis and Agriculture Workshops, and EDCI 672 Case Facilitation

Competency- For this assignment, I used a workshop that I have created and implemented through my career.  And while I was proud of the workshops that I was presenting, this course opened my eyes to the need to evaluate instruction from a variety of perspectives, not just a simple end-of-course evaluation form.  I was able to identify methods of relevant evaluation strategies and develop an actual evaluation strategy for the instructional product that I still use.
