Competency 7: Apply Instructional Design Principles

This competency allowed me to understand and demonstrate design processed for e-learning.  My artifacts were founded on instructional learning theory, and included implementation steps including design, development, and evaluation.

Identifies and analyzes learning and performance problems

Artifact- EDCI 569 Task Analysis Project- Master Gardener Online Educational Program

Competency- I had to create the context for my project, describe my intended audience and potential learning environments, and explain my intended instruction.  My learning objectives for the project were also defined.  These intensive steps were very much like creating classroom-based instruction during my teaching career, and I was fairly comfortable with the design principles.  However, the in-depth understanding of how objectives and instruction were to be partnered, as well as analyzing the audience in more detail will help me in continuing my educational plans as a volunteer instructor for several organizations.

Designs, plans, and develops instructional interventions using appropriate strategies and techniques

Artifact- EDCI 568 Web-Enhanced Lesson Plan- Technology and Agricultural Production

Competency- As I completed this lesson plan I had to consider how I would monitor student learning during the unit of instruction.  The evidence that would be produced by the students needed to be directly related to my specified objectives, and I needed to fully understand how I, as the instructor, would evaluate what I perceived to be the desired learning outcomes.  I included checklists, quizzes, rubrics, and other assessment tools.  When I first began this lesson plan, my driving question was very broad and I needed to narrow it down to a realistic educational question.  After I was able to identify my direct instructional goal, the rest of the assignment fit with my plans in a much better fashion.

Develops an evaluation plan for a project based on stated goals and recognized standards

Artifact- EDCI 569 Paper Prototype Assignment- Part 1 Objectives/Task Analysis, Part 2 Prototype Outline, and Part 3 Final Paper Prototype (Master Gardener Online Educational Program)

Competency- This assignment included multiple parts that helped me to truly understand how to evaluate an educational program.  My context description and learning objectives were included in the first part, while the second and third parts included the growth of the program to full completion.  Part two was my first experience creating a storyboard for an assignment, and this allowed me to use a visual layout of my slides and digital content to explain my instructional processes.  I included a full site map of the paths that the e-learning module would follow, and showed how each slide was connected.  Moving on to part three, my full instructional content was complete, along with the addition of resources, implementation guidelines, and evaluation methods.  For this assignment, I used Merrill’s 5 Star Instructional Design Rating and self-evaluated to 2 gold levels (problem and demonstration), 1 silver level (integration), and 2 bronze levels (activation and application), with an average silver rating.  I found that my areas of need for growth were in the stages of activation and application, and that I could improve in these areas by choosing publishing software programs that I was more adept at using, providing opportunities for learners to demonstrate previous knowledge before determining where to start their instruction, and providing learners with access to help or guidance outside of the online program.
